Xcaret... most famous park in Mexico

Xcaret is located in Playa del Carmen, in the southern part. This is the most emblematic and famous attraction in the Riviera Maya. It has over 50 natural and cultural attractions.

Amongst the water activities you will find underground rivers, beach area and natural pools of seawater. There is also a special area for kids with shallow cenotes (natural water holes).

Other attractions include the Aquarium where you can find the species that live in the Coral Reef; and a turtle center. There is also the butterfly garden, an aviary and beautiful flower gardens. Through your walk in the park you will find in different sections: jaguars, manatees, flamingos, monkeys, bats, deer, tapirs and macaws (you can get your picture taken with them).

One of the main reasons to visit Xcaret and our favorite is the presentation Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, an experience that will give you goosebumps. They will guide you from Mayan Mythology to Traditional Mexican Dances… this is a must.

In the park you can also enjoy the Papantla Flyers ceremony, the Equestrian Show, or the pre-Hispanic Dances in the Mayan Village. Do not miss the Mexican Folk Art Museum, the "Bridge to Paradise" Mexican Cemetery, and the Hacienda Henequenera.

Some people ask us, that if we had to pick between Xcaret and Xel-Ha which one would you choose. Our answer is always the same: depends on what you enjoy the most.

Xcaret is kind of a theme park, it involves not only nature but cultural things, Mayan traditions, Mexican traditions, although it has some water involved and some “adventure” this is a place where you will learn about Mexico while having tons of fun.

Xel-ha is all water nature and adventure, it is water all day long. Big river that you snorkel or enjoy the ride while watching the fish, cenotes, water slides, dolphins, beach, natural pools, zip lines, big jumps into the water, rope bridges, etc… (if you like please read our entry about Xel-ha for more information)

So basically, depends on what you want to do.

Things to consider.

1.- There is a Xcaret Plus package that includes one meal and one beverage, in case you don’t get this package or want some more food or drinks, keep in mind food and beverage inside are pretty expensive.

2.- Xcaret Mexico Spectacular is at night, it is totally worth it, but it gets crowded. Take enough time to be able to have a good seat. There is also a package with dinner included.

3.- There are a lot of transportation to that park, downtown or hotel zone, or you can drive there. It is only an hour away from Cancun.
